Museo Sannitico
Walking through the alleys of the Old Town of Campobasso, you can easily reach the Samnite Museum which since 1995 has been based in Palazzo Mazzarotta, the noble residence of a Neapolitan family whose coat of arms is on the entrance portal. It is the oldest museum institution in the region, inaugurated in 1882 together with the Albino Provincial Library, it is the first public cultural promotion operations.
Together with the nineteenth-century collection, the Museum exhibits and preserves materials from recent excavations carried out mainly on the territory of the Province of Campobasso. Following the chronological criterion, the exhibition reconstructs the history of the Molise area from the Bronze Age to the early Middle Ages in an evocative path that restores the settlement complexity of the peoples who, having arrived in this land, decided to build their own communities.

Tourist experience: The visit allows you to get to know the different populations that arrived in the Molise area: in the lower floors of the building there are finds from the first settlements of the Bronze Age and those of the Samnites, an Italic people who constitute the ancient identity of this land, entered in conflict with Rome in the famous Samnite Wars. The top floor describes the Romanization of the Sannio, with the finds found in the municipiums of Saepinum and Larinum, and the medieval cultures with the barbarian peoples, in particular of the Proto Bulgarian necropolis of Campochiaro, which gave rise to the Molise villages nestled.
