City of Gospić - Patron Saint's Day

Patron Saint's Day in Gospić is celebrated on July 22nd on the feast of St. Mary Magdalene, the patron saint of the city. According to the tradition in Croatia, Patron Saint's Day is celebrated as the day of that city. As part of the celebration, a number of cultural, sports, and musical events are held during June and July. The main celebration is held on Stjepan Radić Square, where one can see the performance of the Majorettes of the City of Gospić, the Wind Orchestra of the City of Gospić, the Historical Unit of the City of Gospić "Lika regiment", the Folklore Ensemble "Dr. Ante Starčević ”. In addition to the entertainment program, there is also a gastronomic offer, and at the very end, fireworks are prepared.

City of Gospić - Village Bilaj

This picturesque village on the Lika River is placed only a few kilometres from Gospić. It has rich history filled with wars and battles, the most famous of them being the Battle of Bilaj, that happened in 1809 between the Napoleon's and Austro-Hungarian army. On the hill Gradina, there are the remains of a Turkish tower, since Bilaj was one of the most important settlements in the area during the Ottoman Empire. Every year on 29th Aug, a holy mass is held in a cave/chapel of St. Stephen, next to St. Jacob's church, as a remembrance of the attack on Bilaj during the Croatian War of Independence.

For those interested in historic and cultural itineraries, Bilaj has many tales to offer, the most famous one being about the Battle of Bilaj, when Šime Starčević spoke to General Marmont in fluent French, telling him not to enter the church with his horse. The visitors can also learn more about the Croatian War of Independence from the locals and visit St. Stephen's cave, where they used to find shelter and hid during the war. The cave was named after the local priest Stjepan Zeba, who played an important role in providing support to the villagers during the war.

City of Gospić - Village Brušane

Brušane is a beautiful village placed at the foot of Velebit. Around one hundred years ago, Brušane had a population of around 730, and today it is only 130. The River Suvaja flows through it and it used to be famous for trout farming. There is also one renovated watermill. The village is built on the oldest karst rocks from Mesozoic and there are 3 world-famous geological sites visited by many scientists -Kalvarija / Velnačka glavica, Paripov jarak and Košna vrelo. There is also St. Martin's church, named after the patron saint of the village. Monument to the Velebit Uprising is a memorial of the first organized resistance of the Croatian people against the military police terror of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

Tourist experience: In a village Brušane one can experience active tourism - there are many cycling trails, beautiful peaks for climbing, rivers for fishing, and the locals are known mushrooms pickers. St. Bartholomew Church in Cernik

The patron saint of the parish of Cernik is St. Bartholomew, a disciple of Jesus who stood out especially for the protection of the poor, the sick and the infirm. The statue of Our Lady of Lourdes in the garden was erected in 2008 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of her apparition, and in the same year a new clock was placed on the front of the church, as a gift to the parish church on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its construction.
