City of Gospić - The Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was originally a parish church, built between 1781 and 1783 in Baroque Classicism. It was elevated to the rank and dignity of the cathedral church on May 25, 2000, with the founding of the Gospić-Senj diocese.
During the Croatian War of Independence, the church was targeted, and on September 15, 1991, it was set on fire. On that occasion, the roof and the cap of the bell tower with the interior burned, and the bells were melted, while the interior of the Cathedral was damaged by arson. Reconstruction began during the Croatian war of independence and before Christmas 1992 it was covered. The renovation was largely completed by the feast of St. Mary Magdalene in 1999.

City of Gospić - The tower of Aga Senković

The tower of Aga Senković is located at the crossing over the river Novčica, and it was the oldest house in Gospić. The building was extensively damaged during the Croatian War of Independence and finally burned when a fire broke out from the neighboring smaller building on September 3, 1993.
Gospić - Croatia/ Lika-Senj county
Tourist experience: For those who love discovering cultural heritage and history, this oldest building in Gospić, built after 1527, might give lots of food for thought. The legend of how Gospić got its name is closely related to the tower and river when two ladies drank water from a stream and discovered this water has healing properties.

Municipality of Lovinac - Church of Saint Michael

The Church of St. Michael was built in the Baroque style with a high bell tower. Inside church there are three altars, an organ, a frescoed ceiling, a confessional, a baptistery, and a pulpit. There is a tomb in the stone floor in the loggia of the church. People consider it was the resting place of the priest Zduna, but there is no solid evidence to confirm this. On the left side of the entrance, there is a stone Roman urn brought by locals from a nearby Roman cemetery and used as a sprinkler.
The Church of St. Michael was first destroyed during the Croatia War of Independence on 24th September 1991. The reconstruction of the church began in 1998 and was completed in 1999, when it was blessed on September 29, on the day of St. Michael (popular name: Miolja), by Dr. Antun Tamarut, Archbishop of Rijeka and Senj.

Cultural informative centre has an interesting history –there was once a community centre and a shoe factory, and the building was destroyed during the Croatian War of Independence and rebuilt in 2016. Now, it is a cultural informative centre, with 2 halls (big and small) used for different events – concerts, theatre shows, exhibitions, meetings, etc. There is a kindergarten and a gym, music school has lessons in the smaller hall, and there is also the office of Agrovelebit LLC (a local company selling potatoes). The plan for the future is to use the attic as a presentation room of Lovinac area by using new media (since there are not many remains of traditional crafts and tools left as the majority of the village was destroyed in the war). Municipality of Lovinac - Zduna tower

It is assumed that the tower was built during the Ottoman Empire, and rebuilt in 1744. The legend says that the tower was built by the coastal masters who were paid in gold by the priest Zduna, but who were robbed by someone on the way across Velebit.
A stone built above the basement door on which are carved letters and numbers ("DAM ZDUNA 1744"), stands upside down. Probably, the tower was restored by uneducated people, who unconsciously or for some other reason, installed the stone upside down.
In the ruins of the Zduna tower today one can see all the techniques of building houses in Lika.

The inscription in the church of Saint Vitus in Kosinj Bakovac is an important part of the Kosinj Glagolitic heritage. It dates from 1517 and can be found above the entrance door, where the coat of arms of Anž Frankopan and the Glagolitic text are turned upside down. There are different theories about the stone, e.g. that it was moved from the nearby Frankopan town of Ribnik in the Kosinj Valley, which some historians relate to the location of the first Glagolitic printing house in Croatia.

Municipality of Perušić - Kosinj Valley

The picturesque Kosinj Valley was once the centre of Croatian literacy which is why it has a significant place in Croatian culture and history. Soon after the Gutenberg press was invented, the Frankopans founded the first Croatian printing house in the old settlement of Ribnik, near today’s Kosinjski Bakovac, which was also the first printing house in this part of Europe. In 1483, Missale Romanum Glagolitice was printed, written in Croatian language using the Glagolitic script and it is the first printed Croatian book. Since the place of printing is not written in the book, many researchers suggest that it happened in Kosinj.

They have thick sticks, so if the villagers start running away from them, they have to catch and they carry them back on the sticks. During the carnival, they burn ‘mesopust’, a character guilty for everything that went wrong during the previous year, and they use the money they collected for organising a village party for Shrove Tuesday.
