Cetin fortress

The town of Cetin was once a strong fortress surrounded by double eighteen meter high defensive walls, towers and observation posts. The solid walls survived the collapse of the Roman state and then withstood the ravages of time and for many centuries, especially during the centuries-old Croatian-Turkish wars when Cetin was an important military-strategic point and defensive fortress.
The most historically and politically significant event that took place in Cetin was the famous Cetin Parliament on 31 December 1526 and 1 January 1527. This great assembly of the Croatian nobility, held according to the old Croatian customs of assembly, determined the future of the Kingdom of Croatia for the next centuries, thus entering Cetin not only into Croatian, but also into wider European history.
The Cetingrad Charter, signed on that occasion by the most famous Croatian nobles and representatives of Ferdinand of Habsburg, is one of the most important documents of Croatian statehood and is stored in the Austrian State Archives in Vienna.
