City of Gospić - The Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was originally a parish church, built between 1781 and 1783 in Baroque Classicism. It was elevated to the rank and dignity of the cathedral church on May 25, 2000, with the founding of the Gospić-Senj diocese.
During the Croatian War of Independence, the church was targeted, and on September 15, 1991, it was set on fire. On that occasion, the roof and the cap of the bell tower with the interior burned, and the bells were melted, while the interior of the Cathedral was damaged by arson. Reconstruction began during the Croatian war of independence and before Christmas 1992 it was covered. The renovation was largely completed by the feast of St. Mary Magdalene in 1999.
