City of Gospić - The tower of Aga Senković

The tower of Aga Senković is located at the crossing over the river Novčica, and it was the oldest house in Gospić. The building was extensively damaged during the Croatian War of Independence and finally burned when a fire broke out from the neighboring smaller building on September 3, 1993.
Gospić - Croatia/ Lika-Senj county
Tourist experience: For those who love discovering cultural heritage and history, this oldest building in Gospić, built after 1527, might give lots of food for thought. Although what is left of it now are just old walls, it hides the story of the noble Senković family who built it during the Ottomans, as well as that of the wealthy Pavelić family who turned it into their luxurious mansion. The legend of how Gospić got its name is closely related to the tower and river when two ladies drank water from a stream and discovered this water has healing properties.

Municipality of Perušić - Inscribed stone

This epigraphic monument originates from the period around 1st century BC and can be found near the settlement of Kosinjski Bakovac, in the forest of Begovača, next to the water source of Begovača. There is an inscription on a stone written in Latin, which settles down a dispute between two Iapodian tribes, the Ortoplini and the Parentini, that were quarrelling about the water source Begovača, where they fed their cattle.

The following text is inscribed on the stone:
“EX CONVENTIONE FINIS INTER ORTHOPLINOS ET PARENTINOS ADITUS AD AQUAM VIVAM ORTHOPLINIS D PASSUS LATUS.”

The translation by NP Velebit:
“Pursuant to the border agreement between the Ortoplini and the Parentini, the Ortoplini are granted access to live water five hundred steps wide.”

Borgo rurale Arcano Inferiore

The ancient village is situated to the south of the castle of Arcano, with a view of the Ledra canal and the Corno valley. According to several sources, its origin is thought to date back to a period somewhere between the 15th and the 16th centuries. A fief of the nobles of Asquino, the village cultivated the farmsteads, the products of which constituted the prebends of the Chapter of Aquileia. The small settlement developed over time from rural buildings, which can be accessed via the typical hallways of the farm buildings. The characteristics of the dwellings is the distribution of their rooms, which is only slightly different between one building and the next: on the ground floor there are cellars and stables, while on the first floor there are the bedrooms and in the attic the hay barn; to the rear, the barnyard and the vegetable gardener divided among the different families. A central element of the rural settlement is the little church of San Giorgio, slightly raised with respect to the clearing in front of it. The building was consecrated in 1505 and consist of a main hall, preceded by an entrance hallway with a roof supported by two pillars; on the top of the building there is a small double lancet bell tower in which there are two little bells. Next to the church, there is an ancient rural building, recently renovated, with stone walls and the remains of several pointed windows made from bricks.

Chiesa di San Giorgio

The building is situated on a small hill that dominates the Corno valley. The little church of San Giorgio still retains its original appearance, as it was at the end of the fifteenth century, despite the remodeling work done during a later period. Consacrate in 1505, it has a rectangular main hall with exposed beams and a polygonal presbytery with a tracery vault with architectural elements; in front of the facade, there is a porch supported by stone pillars. Above the facade there is a seventeenth-century double lancet bell window. The sacristy was added at a later date, presumably during the 17th century.
The stone entrance portal is the work of Giovanni Antonio Pilacorte and is dated 1515: on it, there are carvings of Saint George and the Dragon, the heads of cherubs and floral patterns. The latin wording recites LIMINA COSURGUNT MERIT TIBI IMMANIA GEORGI (great spaces are opened to you thanks to saint George). Inside, there are two altars dedicated to Saint George and Saint John the Baptist. Since 1700, the little church has been a place for rogations, according to stages fixed by tradition: the crosses of the various participating churches (Rodeano, Coseano, Rive) were made to touch each other in sign of peace and brotherhood, as still happens today in san Pietro in Carnia on the day of the Ascension.

The church was built on a little pre-exesting church that was constructed between 1880 and 1883 thanks to a bequest of Giovanni Mecchia and also the work of various Rive d’Arcano’s citizens who contributed to the construction. From the previous building two wooden statues from the altar of San Giuseppe were conserved, the frescoes of the central nave and the chore were executed in the 1925 by Ugo Brollo. In the 1932 was completed the monumental staircase.

Built between 1911 and 1912, the fort was used for the storage of military goods and it was the base for various military exercises in the period between the two World Wars. At the end of the second world war it was abandoned and in the 1989 the site was salvaged and transformed into the Museum of the Tagliamento Fortress with respect to the historical architectural characteristics of the building. Il Castelliere

Placed on an elevated moraine terrace engraved by the confluent Petoc torrent and Corno valleys, in a favorable position with respect to the plain bowl. The Castelliere of Rive d’Arcano called “della Zucule” ( inner surface of 3,6 square meters and a perimeter of 840 meters) it’s an extraordinary testimony of the first human settlements in the territory during the Bronze Age and the first three phases of the subsequent Iron Age. On the Northen side, not defended by the steep slope of the land, an artificial agger was erected 5 meters high and 160 meters long near which shards and bronze objects were found.
In the 1977, the section of Prehistoric Studies of the Center of South Adriatic Antiquies has conducted some excavations on site that confirmed human presence in prehistoric age. Among the pebbles, mixed with black earth, fragments of ceramic and vases were found. The characteristics of this ceramic suggest the possibility that the Castelliere of Rive d’Arcano is framed in the late phase of the Bronze Age, an era when settlements on naturally fortified hills were far from rare. Ludovico Quarina, who was the first person to survey the castellieri and tumulus tombs in Friuli, places these artifacts believed to belong to the Euganean people, between the end of Bronze Age and the first phase of Iron Age (cent. IX-VIII a.C.).
The Castelliere area is also frequented by later populations, until the fourth century as documented by the considerable quantity of terracotta shards found mainly outside the defensive agger. In the same area substantial leftover from the forge work were collected, in particular the remains of iron ore which attest the presence of a workshop for the production of metal weapons and tools.

Villa Minini

In the list of the castles of Manzano among the totally destroyed, there also that of Rodegliano which would have existed in the locality of the same name, now Rodeano (high and low), approximately seven kilometers west of Fagagna, six kilometers south of San Daniele and six kilometers east of Tagliamento river.
One of his lords would have been “D. Henricus de Rodeano” (1220), Enrico de Rodegliano, with Volvileo di Castelnuovo, Enrico di Flagogna, Corrado di Meduno, Volchero di Toppo e Ugerlo di Fanna, distinguish gentleman of that era, was a witness to the contract concluded in February 1220 for which Randolfo and Alberto, sons of Uramo di Toppo, ceded the castle and the jurisdiction of Toppo, Traneb and other places from which an income was obtained to the brothers Engelpretto, Brisa e Varnero (di Sifrido) di Ragogna.
By decree of the Venetian Senate (2 June 1678) and with the ducal of Most Serene Prince Alvise Contarini (8 August), the noble Riccardo Elti was invested, also for his male descendants, with the jurisdiction of the Villas of Rodeano and Rive d’Arcano to which the count’s title was united.
If the Manzano list says is true… in the same place stands the fourth building, surrounded by a solid wall, flanked by two towers with a medieval look with is located in the square of High Rodeano and that it was already owned by Elti Counts ad now it belongs to the Minini family from the early 1900s. Villa Minini is on three floors which developed a total area of 960 square meters. Each floor is characterized by a very generously sized central body from which it is possible to access four rooms on either side of the same. The villa is immersed in the greenery being surrounded by a garden of 2500 square meters from which it is possible to access, through a suggestive tree-lined avenue of thirteen hectares of property grown organically.
Also part of the complex are the appurtenances such as the former spinning mill, the tables and the turret, all in exposed stone.

Monforte Castle

Campobasso is a medieval town built on a hill dominated by the Monforte Castle, feudal symbol of the city. From the sixteenth century, the economic and demographic growth leads to an expansion of the village protected by the ancient walls.
A new urban expansion involving the land at the foot of the hill begins. In the past these territories were cultivated fields and woods. From the nineteenth century, according to the French taste of the wide streets, a new urban centre was designed. It was intended for the emerging middle class, and characterized by tree-lined squares, avenues, urban villas, botanical gardens and gardens which have assigned to Campobasso the name of "Garden City".

Scarth Street

Recently in Campobasso some fragments of history have been found thanks to the action promoted by the Centro Storico Association.
In Piazza Pepe, on the wall of a building, is engraved the inscription "SCARTH ST" (or Scarth Street) a road sign made by the soldiers of the "Royal Canadian Regiment" during the Second World War. In 1943, in fact, the allied troops who came to liberate Campobasso from the German occupation, renamed many places of the center with names of famous English streets and squares and also the city was called "Canada Town".
