Municipality of Perušić - Kosinj Valley

The picturesque Kosinj Valley was once the centre of Croatian literacy which is why it has a significant place in Croatian culture and history. Soon after the Gutenberg press was invented, the Frankopans founded the first Croatian printing house in the old settlement of Ribnik, near today’s Kosinjski Bakovac, which was also the first printing house in this part of Europe. In 1483, Missale Romanum Glagolitice was printed, written in Croatian language using the Glagolitic script and it is the first printed Croatian book. Since the place of printing is not written in the book, many researchers suggest that it happened in Kosinj.

Lake Kruščica is the most popular artificial lake in the Municipality of Perušić. It was built on the River Lika in 1971 for the needs of the hydroelectric plant Sklope-Senj. Borgo rurale Arcano Inferiore

The ancient village is situated to the south of the castle of Arcano, with a view of the Ledra canal and the Corno valley. According to several sources, its origin is thought to date back to a period somewhere between the 15th and the 16th centuries. A fief of the nobles of Asquino, the village cultivated the farmsteads, the products of which constituted the prebends of the Chapter of Aquileia. The small settlement developed over time from rural buildings, which can be accessed via the typical hallways of the farm buildings. The characteristics of the dwellings is the distribution of their rooms, which is only slightly different between one building and the next: on the ground floor there are cellars and stables, while on the first floor there are the bedrooms and in the attic the hay barn; to the rear, the barnyard and the vegetable gardener divided among the different families. A central element of the rural settlement is the little church of San Giorgio, slightly raised with respect to the clearing in front of it. The building was consecrated in 1505 and consist of a main hall, preceded by an entrance hallway with a roof supported by two pillars; on the top of the building there is a small double lancet bell tower in which there are two little bells. Next to the church, there is an ancient rural building, recently renovated, with stone walls and the remains of several pointed windows made from bricks.

Canale scolmatore

The Corno is a torrent with peculiar characteristics that extends for about 40 km, starting from the Municipality of Treppo Grande and flowing into the Tagliamento at Codroipo. The stretch of the route that crossed the Rive d’Arcano area has always been affected by flooding phenomena following heavy rains that caused considerable inconvenience to the community. It was decided to implement changes to the route to avoid this problem but all the projects proposed from 1930 did not develop until 1985, when the Region appointed a working group to study a feasibility project. Delegate to carry out the works was the Alto Friuli Hydraulic Reclamation Consortium which launched a tender for the drilling of a tunnel from San Mauro to Aonedis which had to convey the excess water collected in a basin directly in the Tagliamento. The work was contracted out to the Vidoni business association of Udine and Valsesia of Turin. Work began in 1993 and ended in 1999, and came into operation in 2004.

Chiesa di San Mauro

The little church of San Mauro is located on the fluvial terrace of the Corno river and is surrounded by a wall made from pebbles that once contained the old cemetery. The present-day sixteenth-century building is the result of remodeling and extension of an earlier church that dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries, as testified by the frescoes found inside. However, the first information relative to the church goes back to 1380, when it was erected as a chaplaincy. The building was destroyed by the Turks at the end of the 15th century and it was rebuilt shortly afterwards. Already the seat of the Parish church of Rive, the church has a rectangular main hall with an exposed trussed roof and a presbytery with a ribbed cross vault. The entrance hallway with a depressed arch and sacristy are from a later period. Inside, on the right-band wall, there is the most ancient fresco, dating back around the 12th-13th centuries, depicting Young Christ; while on the walls and on the counter-facade there are frescoes of the Las Judgment, History of the life of christ, Virgin and Child, Saints, Coronation of the Virgin, dating back tot he end of the 14th century or the beginning of the next and can be attributed to the Friulanian post-Vitale da Bologna school.

Built between 1911 and 1912, the fort was used for the storage of military goods and it was the base for various military exercises in the period between the two World Wars. At the end of the second world war it was abandoned and in the 1989 the site was salvaged and transformed into the Museum of the Tagliamento Fortress with respect to the historical architectural characteristics of the building. On the ground floor, two conference halls and an extraordinary permanent exhibition on the fortification architecture of the Great War in Friuli have been set up.

Il Castelliere

Placed on an elevated moraine terrace engraved by the confluent Petoc torrent and Corno valleys, in a favorable position with respect to the plain bowl. The Castelliere of Rive d’Arcano called “della Zucule” ( inner surface of 3,6 square meters and a perimeter of 840 meters) it’s an extraordinary testimony of the first human settlements in the territory during the Bronze Age and the first three phases of the subsequent Iron Age. On the Northen side, not defended by the steep slope of the land, an artificial agger was erected 5 meters high and 160 meters long near which shards and bronze objects were found.
In the 1977, the section of Prehistoric Studies of the Center of South Adriatic Antiquies has conducted some excavations on site that confirmed human presence in prehistoric age. Among the pebbles, mixed with black earth, fragments of ceramic and vases were found. The characteristics of this ceramic suggest the possibility that the Castelliere of Rive d’Arcano is framed in the late phase of the Bronze Age, an era when settlements on naturally fortified hills were far from rare. Ludovico Quarina, who was the first person to survey the castellieri and tumulus tombs in Friuli, places these artifacts believed to belong to the Euganean people, between the end of Bronze Age and the first phase of Iron Age (cent. IX-VIII a.C.).
The Castelliere area is also frequented by later populations, until the fourth century as documented by the considerable quantity of terracotta shards found mainly outside the defensive agger. In the same area substantial leftover from the forge work were collected, in particular the remains of iron ore which attest the presence of a workshop for the production of metal weapons and tools.

Parco urbano Pasc

Until the first half of the 1900s, the Pasc urban park was used as a place to water the livestock of the farmers who lived in that area, thanks to the presence of pools of water that formed after rainfall. In the following years the pools lost their usefulness and the area was transformed into a park for the use of the community. On the top of the hill there is a bell tower built in 1631 in blocks and blocks of sandstone, the belfry was renovated in 1921 bringing the total height of the bell tower to 24 meters. During the Austro-Hungarian occupation the bells were requisitioned and cast to make cannons, the current bronze ones were installed at the end of 1923. Adjacent to the park there is the church of San Floreano.

Pieve di san Martino

The Parish Church of San Martino Vescono has undergone numerous renovations and extensions over time. The Plebem des Ripis is mentioned in a bull issued by the patriarch Gottifredo, according to which in 1184 the church was donated to Liuptrando, king of the Longobards. The first structures of the church probably date back to this period. The church’s appearance is is of the eighteenth century, the same period in which the bell tower was built. The church has a rectangular main hall and a polygonal apse with a ribbed vault. Inside there is an eighteenth-century main altar (1717) with statues of the Annunciation, the altar of the Rosary (1845), the work of Pietro Fantoni di Gemona, a baptismal font delated 1541, created during the rule of the priest Zaccaria, and a Holy water font of 1504 by Giovanni Antonio Pilacorte.
Particularly interesting is the altar in painted stone, created in 1530 by Carlo da Carona with statues of saints, the Annunciation and the Eternal Father.

Villa de Capoa

Villa De Capoa is an important site in Campobasso. It is located nearby the ex-Franciscan monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie, founded in the sixteenth century by Andrea De Capoa, lord of the city. It was used by the monks as a garden for the cultivation of medicinal herbs. In the eighteenth century the Villa became a private property mostly used for walking, in 1806 it became an elegant Italian garden. In 1875 the last owner Marianna De Capoa donated it to the orphanage that bears her name. In 1929 it became a public property managed by the Municipality. Its dimensions are about 16,000 square meters. Inside there is a tuff cave, a fountain, a courtyard with a stone balcony and two tombs in fifteenth century’s style. It is a peaceful oasis in where you can walk and spend time surrounded by nature. In summer some concerts are played in there and it hosts an inclusive playground too.

Villa Musenga

Villa Musenga is an elegant garden located behind Palazzo S. Giorgio, the seat of the City Hall of Campobasso. It stands on the area of the Madonna della Livera, an ex-convent destroyed by an earthquake in 1805. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the Economic Society decided to use it as a botanical garden with the aim of planting new tree species and new seeds. For economic reasons, in the second half of the century the garden became a green area with reducing dimensions to allow the construction of the Town Hall and the Military District. In 1885 the garden was transformed into a villa bordered by a wrought iron railing that was pulled out in 1939. The reference to the Cannons comes from the First World War, when some Skoda cannons, no longer present today, confiscated to the enemy armies were kept. Today the square is dedicated to Bernandino Musenga, a local protagonist of the nineteenth century. At the centre of the Villa, next to many trees, there’s an artwork called "Tree of dreams", a monument donated by the local artist Gino Marotta.
